i don't think anything particular is going to happen in 2012 although we as a species are probably doomed - something could come up to save us in the way of technology or extraterrestrial intervention - in other words, there is some long shot chance that something good could come out of left field

on the other hand, with our environment like a big boulder tettering atop a pencil thin pedestal

with 7 billion humans when that boulder finally falls, can't be too much longer, then we as a species will be severely challenged and possibly 2012 could correspond with somekind of large scale environmental collapse like this, in other words I think this collapse could be that close. The gulf stream that pumps water from the artic to the anartic will shut down when a critical mass of non salt water is melted and the salinity of the artic ocean drops through that threshold that shuts down the whole global, oceanic circulation of water

not to mention warming, lack of water, pollution of all kinds, oceanic depletion ... yea, it could come as soon as 2012 but I still don't think it is a magical time or anything. Unfortunate time for sure!
